Great Quote While watching a webinar (web based seminar; why yes, I am a geek!), the presenter used a great quote as an example: “A kiss is a lovely trick designed by nature to stop speech when words become superfluous.”
-Ingrid Bergman
As a corollary: “Any man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves.”
-Albert Einstein

Interesting Quiz So, I took the Civics Quiz, by way of a_treitell and adelais. I feel that I did pretty well, but I am sad I missed three of the questions:
You answered 30 out of 33 correctly — 90.91 %
Average score for this quiz during November: 78.1% Average score: 78.1%
Give it a try, there are some thought provoking questions, but most require you to think back to introductory U.S. history and the Constitution.

Happy Halloween!!! Ok, perhaps I am too much of a sap, but I'm happy that a bunch of kids have come over this evening trick-or-treating! It reminds me of going out with my Mom, my brother, and friends when I was young.

Final Presidential Debate It seems to me that the "winner" of tonight's debate is "Joe the Plumber." Although, the whole winning and losing thing in this type of debate is rather silly.

Voter Registration Ladies and Gentlemen, This post is to remind everyone to check their voter registration as the deadline in many states for registration is today! Ok, that is a great generalization, but whichever state, territory, or location you are in, it is time to make sure you not only can vote, but that you are registered to vote in your precinct. An easy way to reach your state's voter registration website is through www.canivote.org a non-partisan site presented by the National Association of Secretaries of State! Go on, check in on your registration status, then encourage your friends, neighbors and relatives to do the same (assuming they are US citizens). The choice of candidate is your own, but the responsibility to vote is that of all citizens! Make your voice heard in the most significant way possible, cast your vote on Nov. 4th!!

So, I need some advice... Ladies and Gentlemen, Friends and Companions, Geeks and Nerds, I am looking for a new laptop, and as is the fashion of the times I turn to LJ to see what this "community" feels of the current laptops and learn if anyone has sage advice regarding best brands.
The specs I am considering are: - Dual Core processor with > 1GHz clock speed
- 1GB or better RAM
- 15.4" LCD screen
- NVIDIA or better graphics card
- 120GB Hard Drive (5400RPM or better)
- DVD+-R drive
- OS: Will probably be dual booted with Ubuntu Linux and XP Pro
- 3 or more USB ports
- VGA and S-video output
- integrated SD card reader (optional, but nice)
- Less than $1000
So, what do you all think?

Michael Moore's latest film Last night I saw Sicko and had my usual reactions of sadness, anger, disgust, and fear to a Michael Moore film. I am well aware that his films often stir up much controversy, and I do not intend to do so here. I would rather encourage everyone who has an interest in medical care and insurance in this country (which is pretty much all of us) to see this film. Unlike many of Mr. Moore's other films, this film has little of his usual confrontational style and is almost entirely based upon archival documents and interviews. Does it gloss over the problems in foreign health-care systems and exaggerate the issues of our own commercial system? Yes. Although, in doing so Mr. Moore brings to harsh relief the ways our commercial health care system so often fails those who are most in need of care. As I can not speak for the reaction of anyone else in the theater, I will say that this film encouraged me to reflect with some shame on the inability (or unwillingness) of our country to provide basic healthcare for all. Maybe I am too naive or idealistic, but if a person is nothing without his/her health, then a country is little better with an infirm populous.

Wasting Time With Randomness For those with some time to waste exploring an interesting site, I suggest http://www.random.org/ This web site is entirely devoted to applications of random numbers generated by their atmospheric radio antennas. Spend some time generating random strings, or choosing random times or dates. It is way to easy to spend time there.

Back from Pennsic! Yes, another year has passed, and another Pennsic war graced the fields of Western PA. This year's war was a mix for me of oppressive heat, wonderful company, new friends, old friends, love, loss, and plenty of intoxicating tastes and smells. As usual, the garb fairies did not do well enough by me (except for one new tunic gifted to me by a most generous lady), so I am still faced with too little garb... but that can be corrected. I thank each and every one of the members of the camp for making my time at Pennsic all the better. Any missing piece diminishes the whole, so I must also hang my head by degrees and hope that the friends who were absent this year will join us anon. Now I return to the world not as we would like it to be, but as it is. Time to find a job to support my post-graduate school carcass and a new home to shelter it. May the coming months find us with peace, pleasure, and profit (remember Step. 3).

Scary news from Minneapolis It seems that I-35 over the Mississippi river between Minneapolis and St. Paul has fallen into the river. The video on CNN is quite chilling. My thoughts and prayers are with those who were on the bridge when it collapsed. For those who know pacbarbie, she reports that the members of her family are all safe.

Happy 4th of July! Ladies and Gentlemen, friends and relatives, citizens of this country, and children of all ages... welcome once again to that yearly day of patriotic fervor and backyard BBQ's, of fireworks and flame-grilled burgers; It is July 4th, or Independence Day in the U.S. In honor of the signing of Declaration of Independence two-hundred and thirty-one years ago today, let us take a moment and reflect that over the years our country has seen its fair share of violence, death, discrimination, and hate, but yet it has been witness to great deeds of caring, compassion, ingenuity, and creativity. Despite all its faults (or maybe because of them), I am a proud citizen of this nation. May we all have happy and safe 4th of July celebrations and take but a moment to recognize that this experiment is working, but that our country will continue to thrive only if we are each engaged and active citizens and only with an educated populace. The challenge is great, but we are up to the task! If you would like to see the document that started it all, here is a link to the National Archives: http://www.archives.gov/national-archives-experience/charters/declaration.html

Moon Illusion This weekend the moon will look bigger in the sky than the rest of the year thanks to the "moon illusion". I got a link to a neat article about it, http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2007/27jun_moonillusion.htm?list161084 from a mailing list I'm on. It's pretty cool and current theories suggest it is entirely a trick of the mind; there is no physical reason for the moon to appear larger... unless it is using an old Jedi mind trick on us all. :-)
